Requirements & Roles

The Team Manager position takes care of many off-ice needs of each youth hockey team, particularly on game days. Those individuals interested in volunteering as Team Manager must make every effort to be at all home and away games throughout the season. In addition to maintaining communication with all the family members of youth hockey players through the team communication app, the following are typical duties of a Team Manage

Roster Duties

  • Maintain the official team roster.
  • Verify every player is properly registered with the organization and USA Hockey.
  • Ensure player information is accurate (birthdates, jersey numbers, parent contact information, emergency contacts).
  • Update the roster if players are added, released, or moved between teams.
  • Confirm all players meet roster deadlines established by the league or district.


USA Hockey & League Requirements

  • Work with the registrar to ensure:
  • All players have current USA Hockey registration numbers.
  • Coaches have completed required certifications and SafeSport training.
  • Required roster approvals are completed before league play.
  • Keep copies of official approved rosters for games and tournaments.


Scheduling Duties

Work with coaches and the MCYH Scheduler to identify and coordinate additional friendly games or scrimmages to help the team reach the recommended number of games under the USA Hockey American Development Model (ADM).

Coordinate with opposing teams to schedule non-league game opportunities, as approved by the coaching staff and MCYH.

Communicate game, practice, and tournament schedules to team families.

Coordinate hotel room blocks for away tournaments when appropriate, providing families with lodging information and reservation deadlines.

Assist with team travel logistics and communicate tournament itineraries, schedules, and important information to families.

Notify families promptly of schedule changes, cancellations, or weather-related updates.

Gameday Duties

  • Provide roster information to:Scorekeepers
  • Opposing teams (if required)
  • Tournament staff

Verify jersey numbers match the official roster.

Report roster corrections to the league or tournament as needed.

Coordinate and assign parent volunteers for game-day operations:

  • Away Games: Ensure a parent volunteer is available to staff the home team's penalty box, if required by the host association.
  • Home Games: Schedule parent volunteers for:
  • Game clock
  • Scorekeeping
  • Video and music
  • MCYH penalty box attendant
  • The visiting team is responsible for providing its own penalty box attendant during home games.


Registration Requirements

The following registrations, screening, and training are required prior to the start of the season to serve as Team Manager. Please note that both USA Hockey registration and SafeSport training require yearly updates, while background screening is good for two years.
