Play-Up Policy

Putting Player Development First

The Mason City Youth Hockey Association's Play-Up Policy is designed to ensure that players compete at the level that best supports their long-term development while maintaining fair competition, player safety, and balanced teams. Play-up decisions are made thoughtfully and on an individual basis with the best interests of both the player and the association in mind.

Who Can Request to Play Up?

Play-up requests are generally limited to second-year players within their age division. Families wishing to request a play-up must submit a formal request for consideration prior to team selection.

How Are Decisions Made?

Each request is evaluated using several factors, including:

  • The player's skill level and readiness
  • Performance during tryouts
  • Physical, mental, and emotional maturity
  • Team size and roster needs
  • Player safety and long-term development
  • Overall impact on both teams and the association

Meeting the evaluation criteria does not guarantee approval. Every request is reviewed individually to determine what is in the best interest of the player and MCYHA.

Approval Process

Play-up requests are reviewed by the Hockey Director (or designated evaluators) and coaching staff, with final approval granted by the MCYHA Board of Directors. Families will receive a written decision and may appeal according to the procedures outlined in the policy.

Our Philosophy

The goal of the Play-Up Policy is to place players where they will have the greatest opportunity to develop, gain confidence, and enjoy the game while maintaining competitive balance and a positive experience for all participants. Player development and safety will always remain the top priority.
